Wolff, Werner. ISLAND OF DEATH: A New Key to Easter Island's Culture through an Ethno-Psychological Study. New York: J.J. Augustin, 1948. FIRST EDITION. A VERY GOOD+ or better cloth copy in lightly used dust jacket. An extraordinary book which illumines the mysteries of Easter Island and others in the Pacific region. The work is based on a most interesting story. Dr. Wolff found the key to the hieroglyphics of Easter Island in a document published in 1893 by Tepano Jaussen. Jaussen was the Archbishop of Tahiti in 1868 and worked with a native named Metoro, who translated the meaning of the signs. Wolff based his work on this earlier research and penetrating further into the mysteries exposed an ancient cosmology of exceptional complexity. With 83 figures in text and 20 full plates in rear. 228 pages with index. 4to. Price:
