STYX: Galleri Riis; An Exhibition Catalogue.

Stockholm: Galleri Riis (Edda), 2014. Limited Edition. Custom French fold wraps; A FINE COPY. A splendid publication with works from the exhibition in full page color bleeds. STYX takes the tale of the ferryman of Hades, Charon, as its point of departure. In this exhibition, Fredrik Söderberg's detailed and skillfully executed watercolors are at the same time chaotic, swarming and strict. In these works, Söderberg wants to portray the archetypal conduct of a hero, and reproduces various sacrificial scenes. An image he has previously made use of (King Domalde from the Carl Larsson painting Midvinterblot) which reappears in one of the paintings. The king sacrifices himself for the country to achieve a better harvest - a classic mythological motif. The well-known image of Perseus holding the head of Medusa is also included in one of the works, and William Blake's image of Los entering the tomb is depicted as a fragment, the image in which he carries the sun. Excellent interview titled, "A Conversation Between Sara Walker and Fredrik Soderberg, Stockholm, February, 2014" opens the book, and explores the influences most often found in Söderberg's work, including Aleister Crowley, Wassily Kandinsky, Blake, magic and meditation. The interview is in both English and Swedish. This piece which I obtained direcet from Sweden should be quite scarce as time goes by, but will remain a superlative publication. 8vo. Item #15099
